XenData LTO archives manage files on three storage tiers:

  • Online on the XenData disk cache
  • Nearline on an LTO cartridge within a robotic library
  • Offline on externalized cartridges

The externalized LTO cartridges storing offline files were typically written in the library and then subsequently exported. The provides the lowest cost archive storage available.

XenData software keeps track of the offline file locations and provides an alert if an offline file is requested. The alert identifies the barcode(s) of the cartridges containing the file. A human operator can then bring the file nearline by importing the cartridge into the LTO library. Alternatively, the cartridge can be inserted into an external LTO drive connected to the system. Now that Ethernet-connected drives are available from Magstor and Symply, an external LTO drive can be conveniently located outside the server room together with the externalized cartridges.
