What is Cloud Media Portal?

XenData’s Cloud Media Portal is software that provides a web interface to your cloud archive and displays previews of your video and image files. The archived content can be stored on any of the public cloud providers listed here. It allows your team to browse previews of your archived video and image files without downloading the high-resolution versions. Having selected the required files, team members can then download the files that they need.

Can it run on a VM?

Yes. Media Portal software can be installed on either a physical Windows machine or VM, which can be on-premises or in the cloud. The supported Windows operating systems are listed at this link. The VM or physical PC has a managed disk volume which stores the previews and provides caching for files that are written to the Media Portal.

To obtain video and image previews, must files be written via the Media Portal?

Yes. When files are written to the Media Portal, they are held on the managed disk cache until the previews have been created. The previews are then stored on the cache.

What input interfaces are available for Cloud Media Portal?

The Media Portal may be accessed as an SMB/CIFS or NFS network share, as object storage with an S3 interface and locally as a Windows drive letter by applications running on the same VM or physical computer.

Does it work with cloud storage tiers such as AWS Glacier and Azure Archive Tier?

Yes. It is ideal for use with cloud storage tiers that are not immediately accessible because the previews allow users to look at low-res image files and to browse video previews before initiating rehydration of the original files.

Does the Media Portal subscription include XenData Cloud File Gateway?

Yes. Cloud Media Portal software is built on XenData Cloud File Gateway which provides a file system interface to cloud object storage and manages the local disk cache volume.

Does the subscription allow me to use only the Cloud File Gateway?

Yes. Many customers use the Cloud File Gateway (CFG) without the Media Portal software extension. It allows file-based applications to use cloud object storage. CFG is integrated with many media applications including many Media Asset Management systems.

Does Media Portal write to cloud object storage in a standard way?

Yes. Each file is written to a single object and is compatible with a wide range of applications and utilities provided by the cloud storage providers including Azure AzCopy, Azure Storage Explorer and Wasabi Explorer for Mac and Windows.
