What is LTO calibration?

LTO calibration is a requirement for new LTO-9 cartridges. It is a one-time operation that must be performed before data can be written to the cartridge.

Are there other names for calibration?

It is sometimes called ‘initialization’ or ‘optimization’.

Does it apply to LTO-8 and earlier generation cartridges?

No. It only applies to LTO-9 cartridges.

Does it apply to LTO-8 cartridges when used in LTO-9 drives?

No. It only applies to LTO-9 cartridges.

Why does it only apply to LTO-9 cartridges?

LTO-9 has a higher track density than previous LTO generations and there is a need for greater precision in data placement.

How long does the calibration take?

It typically takes about an hour but can be from 20 minutes to 2 hours. This is a one-time operation that only applies the first time that an LTO-9 cartridge is loaded into a drive.

Are calibration and LTFS format different?

Yes. They are different operations. The one-time calibration process must have occurred prior to formatting a tape as LTFS.

After calibration, does an LTO-9 cartridge need to be re-calibrated when it is moved to another drive, library, data center or environment?

No, the LTO-9 calibration process is only required the first time that a new and unused LTO-9 cartridge is loaded into a drive. Subsequent loads in any LTO-9 drive do not require calibration.

What is the advantage of XenData pre-calibrated LTO-9 cartridges?

They have been calibrated before delivery, avoiding the lengthy calibration process which reduces the initial performance of an LTO archive system.
